TakingItGlobal Reflection

The first time I was involved with TakingItGlobal was approximately a year ago. The idea of working with TakingItGlobal was the teachers'. The classes started to get involved on the website. One year later my class in the new school year, I felt that this was something that we were just pretending to do, just like an economics project done earlier in the school year. I felt contagious when TIG actually came to see us. When I heard about the project, I didn't think that we would be doing this in real life. The announcing of the project seemed like a fantasy or a story. When I started doing the project, I started out not being very comfortable with new people that I don't keep in touch with. Before the yearlong project, our tasks were quite easy. TIG visited us and told us to look around the site to get used to it. The class did small projects like posting updates, discussions, and comments on artwork and articles. I wouldn't have known that these were tests of what you strongly believe in and will decide your group until our teachers had told us. From then on...

The process of accomplishing the project by May 20th was harsh and we all had hard times where everyone was rushing and adding details. The project included making posters, business cards, film, display boards, sending business letters, and much more. The assigning of groups under the ten main understandings was very exciting, but unusual. I never would have known that they (the people who matched the people with the understandings) would decide the understandings with the people that feel strong for a certain understanding. I felt that the process of completing the project was very critical in the first few months. Everyone wasn’t doing much for the groups at first, but artwork was one of the first assignments to complete. I wasn’t until the last few months that all of the group members started to take jobs very seriously - some more than others. I felt that the film and the brochure took a long time to make it just right. A lot of editing was required, done by all the group members-one after another, but none of them made it into the final product. Everything else worked out fine. I agree that there were a few arguments, but that’s how it’s supposed to be. The group members worked on their own assigned jobs because there were still a lot left to do. Everything else seemed easy. That is why they were the ones that were finished first. We ended up folding the brochures and making extra business cards on the day of the “Globalize This!” night. On the night of “Globalize This!” I felt more used to talking with people that went around to ask questions. This ended up being like this because those people are people that I don’t know and that they will not come up to me one day and comment on it because there is a very small chance of finding me again. During this process, I have noticed that my group members were behaving much more helpful to each other than usual.

After I knew that the TakingItGlobal film project was over, I felt a form of joy and little sorrow. Since I had to work with these people in my group for 5-7 months, I ended up sitting with them for a long period of time, but the result worked out better. I felt that everyone had learnt a bit from the demonstrations done by the TakingItGlobal staff. This project has made communication with group members easier and has left us with valuable resources and skills for the near future. I feel thankful for this opportunity of this project because this has been the only class to do this and will always be. (For now) We learnt how everyone has to work together and contribute more time into pressurizing times.

My class is hosting an event called "Globalize this" as where our already decided groups of the 10 understandings were chosen in December/January to produce films that give a message out to viewers. My group- ICTs and Digital Opportunities, is focusing on the topic" ICTs and Development" We are at a stage where everything is roughly done and quite a massive amount of work has to be edited, and possibly redone/rewritten, but I believe that it would be done. No statistics were inputed into the film, but yet I have a few pages ready, for tommorow. Its supposed to be 10 statistics, but...its just expanded a little- a different format. I would be looking forward to the event if it was enjoyable, but now that so much editing is neded, I finally have something to do and won't feel-----useless.This shouldn't be a stressing task to handle. I am off to do more work now. signing off until my next designated update of the year!

Stereotyping around our globe

Stereotyping around our globe
A stereotype is an image you have when you think of a person, group or object. Everyone has started to stereotype at a young age and many are living not to know it. Aspects are made worldwide from which some are stereotypes. There are all kinds of stereotypes. Visual aspects could also be stereotypes. This is the point where you start to think of the person or group in a certain aspect. If you observe stereotyping in the aspect of ICTs, you might say that people that use the computer often wear glasses, are smart, and also unpopular. (Not in all cases) The term or phrase" ICTs and Development" sends out different aspects because they are from different people. As an example, people imagine that development comes from new inventions and inventors. Therefore, people think that in order of developing, inventors would attend meetings and conferences to expand development. Every stereotype may not be true, but some are. The type of stereotype that someone will make depends on what the situation is and what it is based on (For example: the behaviour, clothing characteristics...etc it applies) Some stereotypes show right away. Stereotyping is an immediate judgement of what you see. You will not know how the book, food, item, or person would be like if you just judge of something on the outside. The stereotype you make could be wrong and be the opposite. This is why people say " Never judge a book by its cover!" Acting upon this gives us all a feeling of youth empowerment.

Natural Resources

Have you ever thought of what It would be like to run out of our natural resources? (for example, fresh water)We use fresh water for drinking, washing, cooking, and showers. There is only a limited amount of wayer we can use. Only 2.8% of the water in the world is fresh water and that is the water that we can use. We have invented filters that can condense salt water into fresh water but this process takes a lot of time and is very expensive. I am placing an example, but there are more. I am asking for your opinion and have you ever thought of this topic affecting the future?Have you taken action for your decision and how can we conserve our limited supply of fresh water in the world?
